“Despair” is a thing with broken wings

That Perches on your back

And whispers fears and doubts

And only weighs you down.  

I wrote this back when I was a freshman in high school. We were reading "Hope" by Emily Dickinson, so i wondered what the opposite of hope would be.

Heres the first stanza of "Hope":

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -
